You must have heard of knee replacement. It is a popular orthopedic process where a patient’s knee joint is surgically removed and replaced with some prosthetic component. In the last few years, the number of patients for knee replacement surgery has increased in India. Thus, it clearly shows that this surgical procedure is gaining success and people have started growing faith in it. Now, there are two categories of knee replacement surgery –
- Partial Knee Replacement
- Total Knee Replacement
TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT
Some people have completely damaged knee joints that cannot be repaired. The complete damage can be due to some injury or degenerative disease. Such patients require total knee replacement to get relief from pain, better motion and healthy life. After surgery, patients have to follow some guidelines and need some modifications to a healthy lifestyle. They should avoid rigorous physical movements for a few weeks in the post-surgery period.
There are three types of total knee replacement:
- High flex total knee replacement
High flex implantation gives better motion and allows a person to perform activities such as, kneeling, squatting, climbing stairs.
- Oxinium total knee replacement
Prosthetic components in knee replacement are usually made of metal which gradually undergoes wear and tear thereby loosening the upper surface. To reduce this wear and tear, oxidized zirconium is used in Oxinium implant and this turns out to be the best option.
- Revision total knee replacement
As you can understand from the name itself, it is revision surgery where an existing prosthetic joint or a portion of it is replaced. This process is quite similar to primary surgery of total knee replacement. In case of chronic infection also, revision surgery is done.
PARTIAL KNEE REPLACEMENT
In some patients, a small portion of the knee joint gets damaged and hence, it is no use replacing the whole knee. Partial knee replacement is the right treatment for them. In this surgery, the damaged portion of the joint is replaced with some new prosthetic component. In this joint surgery, doctors make a cut on the knee for accessing the damaged bone and affected joint. Then, a small plastic or metallic component is placed in that place.
Now, how to know whether to go for partial knee replacement or total knee replacement. Only an orthopedic doctor can decide this after careful examination of the damaged knee and the extent of its damage. Therefore, it is very important to examine all opinions and get in touch with some specialist prior to deciding anything.
