Common-Dental-Problems.jpg
21/Nov/2019

Dental problems are never any fun, but the good news is that most of them can be easily prevented. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating properly, and regular dental check-ups are essential steps in preventing dental problems. Educating yourself about common dental problems and their causes can also go a long way in prevention. Here is a list of common dental problems.

Bad Breath

Bad breath, also called halitosis, can be downright embarrassing. According to dental studies, about 85 percent of people with persistent bad breath have a dental condition that is to blame.

Gum disease, cavities, oral cancer, dry mouth, and bacteria on the tongue are some of the dental problems that can cause bad breath. Using mouthwash to cover up bad breath when a dental problem is present will only mask the odor and not cure it. If you have chronic bad breath, visit your dentist to rule out any of these problems.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay, also known as cavities, is the second only to the common cold as the most prevalent disease in the United States. Tooth decay occurs when plaque, the sticky substance that forms on teeth, combines with the sugars and/or starches of the food you eat. This combination produces acids that attack tooth enamel.

You can get cavities at any age—they aren’t just for children. As you age, you can develop cavities as your tooth enamel erodes. Dry mouth due to age or medications can also lead to cavities.

The best way to prevent tooth decay is by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and going to your regular dental check-ups.

Eating healthy foods and avoiding snacks and drinks that are high in sugar are also ways to prevent decay. Your dentist can recommend further treatments that may help reduce your risk.

Gum (Periodontal) Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums surrounding the teeth. It is also one of the main causes of tooth loss among adults. Some studies have indicated that there may be a link between heart disease and periodontal disease.

Everyone is at risk for gum disease, but it usually occurs after age 30. Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors. Diabetes and dry mouth also increase your risk. The symptoms include bad breath, red, swollen, tender, or bleeding gums, sensitive teeth, and painful chewing.

The two major stages of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Regular dental check-ups along with brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily play an important role in preventing gum disease. You should see your dentist if you have any signs of gum disease so you can get treatment to prevent further complications, such as tooth loss.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is a serious and deadly disease that affects millions of people. The Oral Cancer Foundation estimates that someone in the United States dies every hour from oral cancer, but it is often curable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages. It is most often seen in people over the age of 40.

The biggest risk factors are tobacco and alcohol use, including chewing tobacco. HPV—a sexually transmitted wart virus—also increases the risk.

The symptoms of mouth or throat cancer include sores, lumps, or rough areas in the mouth. You may also have a change in your bite and difficulty chewing or moving your tongue or jaw.

Regular dental visits can help catch oral cancer early. You may ask your dentist whether an oral cancer exam is part of their usual checkup. If you notice any of the symptoms or have trouble chewing, swallowing, or moving your tongue or jaw, see your dentist.

Mouth Sores

There are several types of mouth sores and they can be pesky and bothersome. Unless a mouth sore lasts more than two weeks, it is usually nothing to worry about and will disappear on its own.

Common mouth sores are canker sores (aphthous ulcers) that occur inside the mouth and not on the lips. They are not contagious and can be triggered by many different causes. They are only a concern if they don’t go away after two weeks.

Fever blisters or cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus and occur on the edge of the outer lips. They are contagious and will come and go but are not completely curable.

Mouth sores are also seen in oral thrush or candidiasis, a yeast infection of the mouth that can be seen in infants, denture wearers, people with diabetes, and during cancer treatment.

Tooth Erosion

Tooth erosion is the loss of tooth structure and is caused by acid attacking the enamel. Tooth erosion signs and symptoms can range from sensitivity to more severe problems such as cracking. Tooth erosion is more common than people might think, but it can also be easily prevented.

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a common problem that affects millions of people. Basically, tooth sensitivity involves experiencing pain or discomfort to your teeth from sweets, cold air, hot drinks, cold drinks or ice cream. Some people with sensitive teeth even experience discomfort from brushing and flossing. The good news is that sensitive teeth can be treated.

Sensitive teeth can also be a sign of a cracked tooth or a tooth abscess, which needs to be treated by your dentist to prevent losing a tooth or getting an infection in your jaw bone. If you suddenly develop tooth sensitivity, make an appointment with your dentist to see if there is a source that needs to be treated.

Toothaches and Dental Emergencies

While many toothaches and dental emergencies can be easily avoided just by regular visits to the dentist, accidents can and do happen. Having a dental emergency can be very painful and scary. Common problems that require an urgent trip to your dentist include a broken or cracked tooth, an abscessed tooth, or a tooth knocked out in an accident.

Go to a hospital for trauma care if you have a fractured or dislocated jaw or severe cuts to your tongue, lips, or mouth. If you have a tooth abscess that is causing difficulty swallowing or you have developed a fever or facial swelling, get emergency care as well.

Unattractive Smile

While an unattractive smile is not technically a “dental problem,” it is a major reason why many patients seek dental treatment.

An unattractive smile can really lower a person’s self-esteem. Luckily, with today’s technologies and developments, anyone can have a beautiful smile. Whether it’s teeth whiteningdental implants, orthodontics or other cosmetic dental work, chances are that your dentist can give you the smile of your dreams.

Preventions-which-should-be-take-into-consideration-for-Knee-Replacement.jpg
21/Nov/2019

One can ask himself or herself if his or her daily lives are getting hampered, or whether the aching knee is considerably tempering the quality of his or her life, or baffling the professional responsibilities. If one is experiencing these complications, then it is advisable to consult with the doctor whether his or her arthritis is so far advanced as to need total knee replacement.

With all kinds of major surgeries, some safety measures need to be abided by. As an individual  are obtaining a false joint fabricated of metal and plastic to reinstate a natural one made of bones, cartilage, and ligaments, the doctor will always consider options to keep it slightly nosy. The basic objective is to reinstate motion to the joint, with pain abatement being a secondary concern.

The preventive measures to be followed are:

  • If a patient is overweight, an orthopedic might advise him or her to reduce weight through diet control, exercises to assure prompt recovery.

  • To assure replacement without flaws, specific precautions are taken of a patient’s knee. The metal and plastic parts are set after taking away all damaged parts of his or her knee. If required, the kneecap is also taken away.

  • Based on a patient’s age and health condition, the anesthesiologist might go for epidural anesthesia which will allow the patient to remain awake, but without any feeling below the waist. Certain conditions make placing a patient on General anesthesia a precarious proposition. It is a rational concern, as 60 and above 60 is considered to be the favored age.

  • After recovery period, many individuals are glad to be able to move around without help. One will be able to go to the nearby store, move around the home without feeling any pain, access stairs comfortably, cook. After 5 to 6 months or so, he or she might even drive the car also.

  • With every major surgery, some immanent threats are associated. There is a threat of getting infected, especially inbred infection demanding another surgery; blood clotting resulting deep vein thrombosis or bleeding from the incision area; difficulties may arrive from anesthesia, irritation of pain because of the incision and ensuing stitching; and vulnerability of the new knee demanding further surgery.

  • Though knee replacement surgery is among the successful surgeries, recovery tenure will differ from patient to another. A patient’s health, how active he or she was before his or her knee start troubling, his or her natural flexibility, and will power will influence how prompt he or she recovers.

Thus knee replacement is an excellent option for one to return back to his or her normal life after suffering so much pain. But choosing the best orthopedic is the utmost aspect to take into consideration before undergoing knee replacement surgeries.

Dental-Caries.jpg
21/Nov/2019

Dental caries is an infectious microbiological disease of the teeth that results in localized dissolution and destruction of the calcified tissues. It is the second most common cause of tooth loss and is found universally, irrespective of age, gender, caste, creed or geographic location. It is considered to be a disease of civilized society, related to lifestyle factors, but heredity also plays a role. In the late stages, it causes severe pain, is expensive to treat and leads to loss of precious man-hours. However, it is preventable to a certain extent. The prevalence of dental caries in India is 50% –60%.

Prevention and control of dental caries

  • Topical: (i) Use of fluoridated toothpaste and mouth wash; (ii) use of fluoride varnishes (in-office application, longer duration of action, high fluoride content); (iii) use of casein phosphor peptide–amorphous calcium phosphate(CPP–ACP), which is available as tooth mousse, helps tore mineralize the soft initial carious, demineralized areas of the teeth.
  1. Combat the microbial plaque by physical and chemical methods.

(i) Physical methods

The correct method and frequency of brushing should be followed—in the morning and before going to bed and preferably after every major meal.

Tongue cleaning and the use of indigenous agents such as the bark of neem or mango (where toothbrush and paste are unaffordable) should be encouraged. The use of course toothpowder and tobacco-containing dentifrices should be avoided.

The use of various interdental cleaning aids such as dental floss, interdental brush, water pick, etc.  Supplements the cleansing effect   of a   toothbrush.  Use of an electronic toothbrush in children and persons with decreased manual dexterity is recommended.

(ii) Chemical methods

These include the use of a fluoride-containing toothpaste mouth rinses and 0.2% chlorhexidine and povidone–iodine mouthwash. These should be used on prescription of a dental surgeon.

  1. Modify the diet.

Reduce the intake and frequency of refined carbo-hydrates. Avoid sticky foods and replace refined with unrefined natural food. Increase the intake of fibrous food to stimulate salivary flow, which is protective against caries. Consume caries-protective foods such as cheese, nuts, raw vegetables, fruits, etc. Stimulate salivary flow with sugar-free chewing gum. Xylitol (a sugar substitute)-containing chewing gum, if chewed between meals, produces an anti-caries effect by stimulating salivary flow.

Treatment of dental caries

Treatment comprises removal of decay by operative procedures and resto rat ion with appropriate materials such as silver fillings, gold inlays, composite resin, glass ionomer cement, full metal or porcelain crow ns, etc. In advanced cases, where the pulp of the tooth is involved, endodontic treatment may be required. Where there is extensive destruction of the tooth structure or when endodontic treatment is not feasible, extraction of the tooth and replacement by an artificial prosthesis may be required.

Miscellaneous measures

These include the following:

  • Prevention of malocclusion (especially crowding of the teeth)
  • Prevention of premature loss of deciduous teeth
  • Restoration of missing permanent teeth by prostheses (dentures)
  • Making sugar-free chewing gum freely available and affordable in the country
